What is KVM? KVM is an abbreviation for Keyboard, Video Display Unit, Mouse. A KVM switch is a hardware device that allows users to control multiple computers from a single keyboard, monitor and mouse. There are two types of KVM devices available. They are Local Remote and KVM over IP.

Local Remote KVM device allows users to control computers 1000 feet away from users console.

KVM over IP is to allow users to control the computers remotely by using the TCP/IP Internet infrastructure.

There are many providers available for KVM and based on the product the functunality may be changed.

In addition to this, now a day, there are many Switches available in the market for KVM over IP. Each have their own way to function. They allow to connect to server with limited users (2 users, 4users etc.) and ports (4 ports, 8 ports etc.). You can select the switch based on your requirement. You can also manage any network devices from any location using KVM.

Digital KVM is ATEN's new generation of KVM over IP (IP Based KVM) solution. The main characteristic of KVM over IP is to allow users to remotely control the PC by using the TCP/IP Internet infrastructure. ATEN's Digital KVM of KVM over IP allows users to extend usage distance without having to re-wire. Users only need to connect the RJ-5 interface of the Digital KVM with the Internet in order to realize the KVM over IP infrastructure, allowing the management personnel to conveniently control the server from anywhere using Internet or LAN.

The KVM is similar to the JVM in that it is the engine that runs application and applet written with Java technology. Using a KVM switch can save the manager the cost of buy a enthusiastic keyboard, monitor and mouse for each computer, save space in the server room.
