SEO is of course search engine optimization and search engine optimization is the process of optimizing, or making your site good for, natural search engine rankings. I use the term natural search engine rankings to simply differentiate SEO from the purchased, or sponsored search engine rankings.

So what is important in search engine optimization?

There are two primary ideas of search engine optimization – that of on-page seo and that of off-page seo.

On-page seo is primarily that portion of seo that is performed on the web page itself – hence on-page seo. On-page seo is the least important form of seo, although without it one would wonder if a web site should really be ranked at all. On-page seo is simply very elementary, and foundational.

Off-page seo is primarily that portion of seo that is performed outside the realm of the web page itself – primarily on other people’s web sites – hence the term off-page seo.

On page seo generally deal with such areas as optimizing the title, the keywords, the description, and the contents in such a way that when the search engines read the source code of the page, the automatic assumption is that the web page has as its main premise, the idea that the keyword emphasized, connotes.

Off-page seo is generally the creation or proliferation of inbound links that are themselves optimized for the web pages’ keyword or keyword phrase. When the search engines see that there are many inbound links to your web page that have similar topics to your web pages’ theme – namely keywords (although a word of warning here: all the text anchors should not have exactly the same text) – they will assume that your web page is viewed by other web pages as being respected as a web page specializing in your chosen keyword.

Google uses software, often referred to as a 'spider', which constantly crawls the internet by following links from one site to another, reading the text of the websites it finds and then recording or indexing the results in its database. When someone looks for some thing using keywords such as 'Services', the Spider uses its secret formula or algorithm to determine the most relevant results for that request.

The results page is made up of two sections - sponsored links and organic results. The sponsored links, which is paid advertising, are the entries on the right-hand column. The organic results are in the left-hand column. Getting your website to rank as high as possible in the organic results is referred to as SEO.

How to Improve Rankings?
Google  has no set of rules just guidelines no specific rules. These guidelines are the key to the success if done properly. Remember there are no rules it is quite possible that you achieve your results by using one thing and your competitor achieves the same results using different.

Benefits of SEO:
1. Targeted Traffic: Search engine optimisation campaign can increase the number of visitors for your website for the targeted keyword(s) or phrase. Converting those visitors into potential customers is one of the arts of search engine optimisation. Search engine optimisation is the only campaign which can derive targeted traffic through your website. Essentially more targeted traffic equal more sales.
2. Increase Visibility: Once a website has been optimised, it will increase the visibility of your website in search engines. More people will visit your website and it will give international recognition to your products/services.
3. High ROI (Return on Investment): An effective SEO campaign can bring a higher return on your investment than any other type of marketing for your company. This will therefore increase your volume of sales and profit overall.

Here are 8 compelling reasons why you should include search engine marketing in your online marketing mix and the very real competitive advantage it can give your business...

1) The #1 way people find websites
Numerous surveys have shown that search engines and directories are the most popular method used to find websites. More than 80% of Internet users rely on search engines & directories as their preferred method for locating websites. (GVU 10th WWW User Survey)

2) People use search engines - a lot
The majority of Web users search the web every day (57%). The only thing done online more often than using search engines is checking email - 81% check email every day.(Statistical Research Inc Feb 2000)

3) Billions of pages. Millions of searches
There are more than 320 million searches are made through search engines and directories each day. Google alone had over 55 billion searches during 2002. The exponential growth of the Web means there are now billions of web pages and consequently this has increased peoples reliance on search engines as a way of locating information online.

4) Qualified traffic ready to buy
Traffic search engines and directories deliver to websites is highly qualified because users are actively searching for the information. This is the major difference to traffic delivered by banner advertising.

5) More effective than banners
There are 5 – 6 times more online purchases made from traffic delivered by search engines compared to banner advertising. The cost for online marketing campaigns using search engines is significantly lower than that for banner advertising. Not only are search engines highly effective online marketing tools – they’re also cost efficient.

6) Marketing managers "know" they work
Given the above facts, it’s not surprising that 66% of web marketers rated search engine marketing as the top method for driving traffic to their web sites. Second was email marketing (54%). (American Direct Marketing Association survey - Aug 2000)

7) The experts say they work
A report by Forrester Research stated "search engines reach valuable, motivated, and ready customers. To capitalize on search as a marketing tool, marketers should shift acquisition email and ad dollars to search..." (Forrester Research - April 2002)

And finally here is a very compelling reason to include search engine marketing from your online marketing mix...

Cool Competitors inaction - your opportunity
Nearly 46% of marketers surveyed by CyberAtlas Research allocate less than 0.5% of their annual marketing budgets on search engine optimization (SEO) services. Only 10 percent spend more than 25% of their marketing budgets on increasing their visibility on the Web.

The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is often measured by the more technical part of web marketing. This is done because it helps SEO endorsement of the sites and at the same time, it requires some technical knowledge - at least basic knowledge of HTML. SEO is sometimes also called SEO legal deposit, like most of the techniques used to promote sites in search engines deal with text.

Search Engine Optimisation  is a part of Search Engine Marketing . SEO is the act of modifying the HTML and content of your web site for applicable, directed key phrases in order to hit higher 'organic' search engine rankings than equaling sites
